CAREER OVERVIEW 

Identify, remove, pack, transport, or dispose of asbestos or other hazardous materials. Specialized training and certification in hazardous materials handling or a confined entry permit are generally required. May operate earth-moving equipment or trucks. 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

Workers must be able to perform basic mathematical conversions and calculations when mixing solutions that neutralize contaminants and should have good physical strength and manual dexterity. Because of the nature of the work and the time constraints sometimes involved, employers prefer people who are dependable, prompt, and detail-oriented. Because much of the work is done in buildings, a background in construction is helpful. Specific skills associated with this occupation include: operate earth-moving equipment or trucks; comply with safety requirements; apply knowledge of hazardous materials requirements; use hand and power tools.

SALARY RANGES 

  • $39,130 – $59,370 (annually)
  • $18.81 – $28.54 (hourly)
